What Should I Do if My Child
has a Toothache?
If you have a young child, you know how energetic they can be. At the
same time, you know when something is wrong. If they are complaining about
their mouth or tooth hurting, you should take it seriously because it could
be a serious problem.
What Causes Children
to have Toothaches?
At Bilski Family Dentistry, we often see young children who are
complaining about a toothache, and after we take a look, we find that they
have a decayed baby tooth. This decay is painful
for your child because it exposes the nerves in the more sensitive layers of
your child’s teeth.
This can also lead to infection,
which can cause even more painful problems. In most cases, we have to extract
the tooth, which is no fun for the kids, or the parents, or the
parents’ wallets, especially because it can all be
prevented!
Another reason your child may have a toothache could be that their
roots have dissolved. This is natural as
children grow; however, the gum is so fibrous, and it holds onto the tooth
like a rubber band causing bacteria to form in between the gums and the
tooth.
How to Prevent
Toothaches?
So, what do you do to prevent your child from having a toothache?
Avoid sugary drinks and foods. We know how much children love sugar, so this
isn’t always going to happen. So, make sure that they brush their
teeth after having a lot of sugar.
We also suggest you start bringing your child to the dentist with
you when they are around two years old. This way, they become familiar with
the process and recognize that it is not a scary place and can even be
fun!
We recommend check-ups twice a year, just like the adults. During
these visits, we give them fluoride and look to see if they need sealants.
Sealants
reduce cavities by 75-80%!
If you have a young child who is complaining about a toothache,
take it seriously and get them to the dentist, as it could be infection or
decay, and we can help them feel better! However, it is always better to
prevent this with regular check-ups and brushing!
