TMJ and Migraine Relief
from the Dentist
Did you know that your dentist can help you with migraine relief?
Many people who experience constant and painful headaches think that it is
due to migraines, and sometimes it is, but sometimes its
TMJ.
What is TMJ?
TMJ is a disorder that causes pain in your jaw and the
muscles surrounding it, which can eventually lead to these
excruciating headaches and discomfort.
Do I have Migraines or TMJ?
If you are someone who is struggling with these headaches, you
might have seen a few doctors, a physician, an EMT, and they might end up
referring you to a dentist for further examination. This is because these
headaches relate to the fifth cranial nerve, which we as dentists work with
all of the time.
In order to tell which one of these conditions is the reason for
your headaches, we evaluate your bite with a piece of technology called the
Digital Two. This technology shows us how aligned your bite is, which can
help us determine what is causing your pain.
The process can take a few weeks for us to properly diagnose, but
the steps are easy. First, you come in for your appointment, and we give you
a mouth guard that you can wear at night, or all of the time if you prefer.
Then we see you for two or three appointments, spaced out every two to three
weeks.
If the issue is TMJ, those mouth guards will resolve the issue,
but it is migraines we then suggest a variety of solutions such as therapy,
crowns, adjusting your bite, and so on.
