Elderly Dentistry in
Independence, Ohio

Proper dental care is always essential, but even more so as we
age. The older we get, the more susceptible our teeth and gums are to decay,
cavities, and other issues.

Why is Dental Care So Important as We Get Older?

As we get older, we have external factors, such as certain
medications that can cause dry mouth, which leads to more
cavities.

Likewise, our teeth have been used for so many years, and if you
don’t take care of them at a younger age, you will need to keep a
better eye on them when you’re older to prevent decay or
loss.

How Often Should Elderly Patients Go to the
Dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends that patients should
visit the dentist at least twice a year or every six months. However, when we
start to get older, they recommend that patients should come in four times a
year, every three months. This ensures that if there are issues that are more
likely with age, we can catch them sooner and even prevent them with routine
cleanings and care.

Most studies say that once we turn 75 years old, we should start
going to the dentist four times a year, but it should be looked at on a case
by case basis. If you are 80 and your teeth are still looking great, you can
probably get away with coming in twice.
